AI SEO Training for SEOs Who Already Know SEO

Free training in GEO, AEO, AI citations, retrieval, entities and AI-search measurement, without making you sit through SEO 101 again.

AI SEO training teaches search professionals how to extend traditional SEO into AI-generated search experiences such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

If you already understand crawling, indexing, search intent, internal links, content and backlinks, the useful part is learning what has changed:

  • how AI search retrieves information
  • why some pages and brands get cited
  • how query fan-out changes research
  • how entities and third-party sources affect visibility
  • how to structure information so it is easier to retrieve
  • how to measure mentions, citations and commercial outcomes

What is AI SEO training?

AI SEO training teaches you how to improve visibility across both traditional search results and AI-generated search experiences.

A complete programme should still cover the foundations of SEO: crawlability, indexability, intent, content, architecture, internal linking and authority. It should then extend those skills into Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO), Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, retrieval, query fan-out, AI citations, brand mentions, entity optimisation, third-party source analysis and AI visibility measurement.

Google's own optimisation guidance treats optimisation for its generative AI features as part of established SEO practice rather than a separate discipline, and documents retrieval and query fan-out as components of its AI-search systems. Read Google's guide to optimising for generative AI features.

The practical change: ranking is no longer the only visibility outcome worth measuring. A page can rank without being cited. A brand can be mentioned without its own website being cited. A third-party page can become the source that supports information about your brand. That gives SEO professionals a wider system to analyse.

AI SEO training vs using AI for SEO

This distinction is where a surprising amount of training gets muddled.

Using AI for SEO

Using tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude to make conventional SEO work faster: keyword research, clustering, content briefs, title tags, drafting, coding, automation and data analysis.

AI SEO

Visibility inside AI-powered search and answer experiences: retrieval, citations, generated recommendations, entity understanding, brand mentions, third-party corroboration, source selection and AI visibility measurement.

A modern training programme can teach both. They are not the same thing, and the distinction is visible across the current market: course comparison sites now separate programmes that mainly teach conventional SEO with AI tools from programmes that teach GEO, AEO or LLM citations.

What should AI SEO training teach?

If you are already an SEO, the incremental skill set breaks into seven areas.

SkillWhat changes
AI-search mechanicsHow generated answers, retrieval and citations differ from ranked results
Query researchFrom one keyword list to a multi-intent query universe
Citation analysisWhich domains and URLs repeatedly support AI answers
Content retrievalMake useful information clear, specific and independently understandable
Entity optimisationRelationships between brands, people, products and topics
Off-page AI SEOLinks, mentions and the external source ecosystem analysed together
MeasurementMentions, citations, source share and business outcomes, tracked repeatedly

The eight training steps

Each step states what changes and links the free lesson that teaches it.

Step 1: Understand how AI search retrieves information

Traditional SEO trained us to ask where a URL ranks. AI search adds more questions: is the brand mentioned, is the website cited, which URL is cited, which third-party domains appear, which competitors repeatedly show up, and does the answer change when the query changes. Google documents retrieval from its index and query fan-out as parts of its generative systems. Google explains AI features and query fan-out. You need to understand source behaviour, not only rankings.

Learn it in: Module 2 · Understanding AI Search, especially 2.1 AI Overviews and AI Mode and 2.4 Query Fan-Out and Answer Variability.

Step 2: Learn GEO and AEO without getting lost in acronyms

GEO and AEO overlap heavily, and Google's own guidance treats optimisation for generative AI features as SEO continued rather than replaced. GEO extends the problem instead of throwing away SEO. The practical questions: which information gets retrieved, which sources get cited, which entities are recognised, which third-party sites support the answer, why a competitor appears when you do not, and whether you can measure your intervention. If training does not eventually reach those questions, it is mostly terminology.

Learn it in: Module 3 · AI SEO & GEO Research.

Step 3: Build a query universe, not only a keyword list

AI-search analysis needs a broader query universe than rank tracking: informational, commercial, recommendation, comparison and trust questions around your entity. Different question types expose different competitors and different cited sources. The goal is not a bigger spreadsheet; it is understanding the search neighbourhood around the entity.

Learn it in: Lesson 3.1 · Query Universes and Prompts.

Step 4: Learn citation-source analysis

The most valuable new workflow for an experienced SEO. Take a repeatable query set and record, for each query: brand mentioned, cited domain, cited URL, source type and competitor presence. Across enough queries, patterns appear: one publication repeatedly cited, one competitor appearing across recommendation prompts, directories surfacing for commercial questions, first-party documentation dominating technical questions, or a third-party page supporting information about your own brand. Instead of saying "we need more GEO", you can say which six domains repeatedly appear as cited sources while two competitors appear consistently and your brand does not. That is a research problem you can work on.

Learn it in: Lesson 3.3 · Citation Source Analysis. The AI Citations guide covers the full workflow in one place.

Step 5: Make important information easier to retrieve

There is no magic word count, no magic paragraph length and no schema type that guarantees a citation. Google's guidance keeps pointing at established practices and useful, non-commodity content. The practical lesson: make important information easy to identify, understand and verify. Explicit definitions, descriptive headings, direct answers, self-contained passages, comparison tables, specific entities, evidence and original numbers. A page that opens with "in today's rapidly evolving digital landscape" needs a warm-up lap; a page that opens with "AI SEO training teaches search optimisation for both traditional search results and AI-generated search experiences" does not.

Learn it in: Lesson 4.1 · Answer Passages and Extractable Content.

Step 6: Strengthen entities, not only URLs

Search systems encounter organisations, people, products, services, locations, topics and the relationships between them. That adds an audit layer: check whether the same important facts appear consistently across your website, About page, author profiles, structured data, social profiles, directories, publications and reviews. Schema can make relationships clearer; it cannot manufacture reputation or independent corroboration.

Learn it in: Lesson 5.1 · Entity Consistency Across the Web.

Step 7: Expand off-page SEO beyond backlinks

Backlinks have not become irrelevant; the research problem has grown wider. Alongside "which pages link to the competitors ranking above me", ask which external pages and domains repeatedly appear when AI systems answer questions in your market: specialist publications, industry sites, comparison pages, communities, forums, YouTube, directories, reviews, documentation, datasets and repositories. A useful external document can earn a link, a mention, an entity relationship and another retrievable source at once, which is why off-page AI SEO should not be reduced to building more backlinks.

Learn it in: Lesson 6.1 · Links Versus Mentions in AI Search.

Step 8: Measure AI SEO like an SEO, not like a screenshot collector

Someone asks ChatGPT a question, the company appears, screenshot, LinkedIn post, victory. That is not a measurement framework. Generated answers, queries, platforms and results all vary, so track repeatedly. Traditional metrics still count: rankings, impressions, clicks, conversions. Add the AI layer: brand mentions, citations, cited URLs, cited domains, competitor appearances, source share and mention context. Then connect it to branded search, referral visits, leads and revenue. Google now documents a dedicated generative AI performance report in Search Console covering AI Overview and AI Mode impressions. Read the Generative AI performance report documentation. Visibility is useful; commercial visibility is better.

Learn it in: Lesson 7.2 · Tracking AI Mentions and Citations.

AI SEO training for agencies, in-house teams and beginners

The same path, three different entry points.

Agency teams

The exercises become client deliverables: AI visibility baseline, query universe, citation-source log, competitor citation benchmark, entity consistency audit, external source opportunity map and an AI-search measurement report. Experienced teams should start at Module 2 or Module 3 instead of repeating beginner lessons.

In-house teams

Not every marketer needs to become a technical SEO; the team needs a shared framework. Where are we visible, which competitors are mentioned, which sources get used, is our information easy to retrieve, are our entity facts consistent, what can we test, and how do we measure the result? That framework travels across SEO, content, PR, brand and leadership.

Beginners

Do not skip the foundations because AI search sounds newer. Crawling and indexing, search intent, architecture, on-page, internal links and backlinks first; then AI search, GEO, citations, retrieval, entities and measurement. AI SEO makes considerably more sense once you understand the system it extends. Start with the learning roadmap or Module 1.

Free AI SEO training vs paid training

Free material is already good enough to learn the fundamentals and begin experimenting, and the current market includes many substantial free programmes alongside paid courses and communities.

Paid training earns its price when the bottleneck is live feedback, implementation reviews, experienced practitioner access, community, site audits, current experiments or accountability. Those are delivery advantages, not secret information.

Certification is a separate question. A certificate can help when an employer requires proof of completion or when you are building a CV; it does not prove you can execute. Practical evidence, such as a citation analysis, a query universe, an entity audit, a visibility baseline or a before-and-after experiment, demonstrates more. If certification itself matters to you, read the AI SEO certification comparison on AISEOCourse.co, or the free AI SEO courses comparison for the zero-cost route.

AI SEO training FAQ

Straight answers to the questions people ask before starting.

What is AI SEO training?

AI SEO training teaches search optimisation for both traditional search results and AI-generated search experiences. It can include GEO, AEO, retrieval, citations, entities, third-party sources and AI visibility measurement.

Is AI SEO training different from a traditional SEO course?

Yes. Traditional SEO training primarily covers crawling, indexing, keywords, content, links and rankings. AI SEO training extends those foundations into retrieval, generated answers, citations, entities and AI-search measurement.

Is using ChatGPT for SEO the same as AI SEO?

No. Using ChatGPT for briefs, keyword research or automation is AI-assisted SEO. AI SEO also covers visibility inside AI-powered search and answer systems.

Is GEO part of AI SEO?

Yes. GEO focuses on improving visibility in generative search and answer experiences. It is best treated as an extension of SEO rather than a replacement for it.

What is AEO?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimisation. It generally refers to improving how clearly information can answer users' questions in answer-oriented search experiences.

What should experienced SEOs learn first?

Start with AI-search mechanics, then move into query-universe research, citation-source analysis, retrieval, entity optimisation, third-party source analysis and measurement.

Is AI SEO training free?

Yes. AISEOCourse.academy provides free access to its AI SEO training curriculum, without an account or paywall.

How long does AI SEO take to learn?

An experienced SEO can understand the core workflow relatively quickly. Competence comes from applying it to real queries and websites, collecting repeated observations and testing changes.

Do I need an AI SEO certification?

No. Certification can document training completion, but practical evidence such as citation analysis, entity audits and measured experiments better demonstrates implementation ability.

Can AI SEO training guarantee citations in AI Overviews?

No. Generated answers and cited sources can vary. Training should teach repeatable measurement and testing rather than guarantee a particular citation or ranking.
