Learn AI SEO: A Practical Roadmap for 2026

If you want to learn AI SEO, start with SEO, not AI. Then learn two additional skill sets: using AI to do SEO work, and improving visibility inside AI-powered search. This roadmap puts them in the right order, with a free course module for every stage.

The AI SEO learning roadmap

A useful learning order runs from SEO fundamentals through AI-assisted work, AI search, AEO, GEO, citations, entities, off-page visibility, measurement and real experiments. You do not need to master a stage before starting the next: understand one concept, apply it to a real website, measure what happens, move on.

The objective is not to memorise another SEO acronym. It is to become capable of diagnosing and improving visibility across both traditional and AI-powered search.

What is AI SEO? Two things, and the distinction saves time

AI SEO is used to describe two related but different disciplines. Learning them in the wrong order wastes weeks.

AI for SEO

Using artificial intelligence to perform SEO work: keyword research, SERP analysis, topic clustering, content briefs, content production, metadata, internal linking, schema generation, technical analysis and automation. AI makes existing workflows faster. But learning ChatGPT prompts does not automatically teach you how to appear in ChatGPT answers.

SEO for AI search

Improving how a brand, website or piece of information appears within AI-powered search and answer systems: Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and others. This side introduces AEO, GEO, AI citations, content retrieval, entity optimisation, third-party source visibility and AI visibility measurement.

A modern AI SEO practitioner should understand both sides.

The roadmap, step by step

Each step states what to learn and links the free module that teaches it. The deep teaching lives in the course; this page keeps you on the path.

Step 1: Learn SEO fundamentals first

AI-powered search has not made crawling, indexing, relevance, authority or search intent disappear. Understand why a page gets discovered, what query it satisfies and why one source is considered more useful than another before touching the AI layer.

Learn it in: Module 1 · SEO Foundations, especially 1.1 How Search Engines Work and 1.2 Search Intent.

Step 2: Learn how to use AI for SEO

Use AI to make good SEO judgement faster: keyword expansion, SERP analysis, clustering, briefs and content QA. Validate every output against real search results, because AI can invent plausible-looking opportunities, and Google tells you whether the intent exists. Do not automate a workflow you do not understand yet; you would only produce mistakes faster.

Learn it in: Module 8 · Testing & Scaling, especially 8.2 Automation Without Nonsense and 8.3 Building Repeatable Workflows.

Step 3: Understand how AI search changes discovery

AI-powered search can interpret a question, retrieve information from multiple sources, synthesise an answer, mention brands, cite supporting sources and handle follow-ups. Ranking remains useful, but you now also care about mentions, citations, cited URLs, the third-party sources that influence answers, and whether competitors get recommended instead.

Learn it in: Module 2 · Understanding AI Search, especially 2.1 AI Overviews and AI Mode and 2.4 Query Fan-Out.

Step 4: Learn AEO

Answer Engine Optimisation makes information easy for systems to understand, retrieve and use when answering questions: clear answers, descriptive headings, explicit definitions, useful lists, comparison tables and supporting evidence. A page that spends 700 words warming up before defining its core term creates retrieval friction. Define first, then expand.

Learn it in: Lesson 4.1 · Answer Passages and Extractable Content.

Step 5: Learn GEO

Generative Engine Optimisation focuses on visibility within generative search and AI-answer environments, and it overlaps heavily with SEO and AEO. Learn how relevance, content quality, entities, authority, citations, retrieval and source selection interact. Treat GEO as a discipline, not a bag of hacks: if a tactic promises citations because you added one file, test the claim before building on it.

Learn it in: Module 3 · AI SEO & GEO Research and Module 4 · Content & Retrieval.

Step 6: Learn AI citation analysis

This is where AI SEO becomes practical. Choose 20 to 50 questions relevant to a real business, covering informational, commercial, comparison, recommendation, brand and trust queries. For each one, record the brands mentioned, the competitors mentioned, the cited URLs and domains, the source types and the context. Patterns emerge: you may find a competitor is repeatedly cited because AI systems retrieve its documentation, Reddit threads, YouTube videos and review pages. That beats vaguely deciding to optimise for ChatGPT.

Learn it in: Lesson 3.2 · Running a Repeatable Query Set and Lesson 3.3 · Citation Source Analysis. The AI Citations guide covers the whole workflow in one place.

Step 7: Learn content retrieval

An AI system may need one useful passage from your page, not the whole article. Important sections should carry their own context: name the subject, answer directly, define unfamiliar terms and support factual claims. You do not need to turn every paragraph into robotic FAQ copy; make important information explicit.

Learn it in: Lesson 4.2 · Entity Naming and Descriptive Headings.

Step 8: Learn entity SEO

AI systems need to understand who and what you are talking about. If a business appears online under slightly different names, descriptions and categories, machines have to resolve that relationship too. Audit brand naming, organisation descriptions, author identities, structured data and third-party mentions. Schema can support entity clarity; it does not replace the underlying evidence.

Learn it in: Module 5 · Entity & Brand Authority, especially 5.1 Entity Consistency.

Step 9: Learn off-page AI visibility

Your website is not the entire search ecosystem. For some queries, AI systems lean on publishers, review sites, directories, YouTube, Reddit, forums and documentation. Off-page SEO has a second job now: identify which external sources influence answers in your query space, then determine which of them you can legitimately earn visibility on. Sometimes the most valuable page influencing an AI answer will not be yours.

Learn it in: Module 6 · Off-Page AI SEO, especially 6.4 Citation Opportunities.

Step 10: Learn AI visibility measurement

Without measurement you are guessing. Build a representative query set, record a baseline, then track brand mentions, competitor mentions, citations, cited URLs, cited domains and recommendation context. Make changes, repeat the same query set and compare. AI answers vary between runs and systems, so do not overreact to one screenshot; look for patterns across repeated observations.

Learn it in: Module 7 · Measurement, especially 7.2 Tracking AI Mentions and Citations.

Step 11: Learn AI SEO by building a real project

This is the step most people avoid. Courses feel productive; projects expose what you do not understand. Choose a real website and one commercially relevant topic. Week 1: research, building the query universe and baseline. Week 2: build, improving intent, retrieval clarity, entities and evidence. Week 3: authority, investigating and earning relevant third-party visibility. Week 4: measure, repeating the baseline and writing down what changed. Then you have started.

Learn it in: Lesson 8.1 · Running SEO Experiments You Can Trust.

A 30-day AI SEO learning plan

You do not need six months before doing real work. Thirty days of focused stages is enough to reach your first measured experiment.

DaysFocusDo this
1 to 5SEO fundamentalsCrawling, indexing, intent, on-page, internal links, Search Console. Optimise one page.
6 to 10AI for SEOKeyword expansion, SERP analysis, clustering, briefs and content QA with AI, verified against real data.
11 to 15AI search, GEO and AEOAI-search fundamentals, citations, retrieval. Rewrite one page with clearer extractable answers.
16 to 20Entities and sourcesAudit entity consistency, author information, organisation information, external mentions and recurring citation sources.
21 to 25MeasurementBuild a query set and record mentions, citations, competitors, cited URLs and cited domains.
26 to 30ExperimentImplement one meaningful change, measure again and write the case study: hypothesis, change, measurement, result, next action.

A written 30-day case study is worth considerably more than saying you have watched 40 hours of AI SEO videos.

What tools do you need to learn AI SEO?

You do not need an expensive stack to begin.

Google Search Console

Queries, impressions, clicks, indexing and page performance. The free source of truth for conventional search.

The live SERP

Intent, competitors, page types, SERP features and authority. The SERP is the evidence.

AI search platforms

Run relevant questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI experiences. Study the answer and its sources.

A spreadsheet

Query, platform, brand mentioned, competitor, citation, cited URL, cited domain, date. Enough to begin.

An AI assistant

Classify data, analyse patterns, summarise SERPs, build briefs and QA content. Do not outsource judgement to it.

Specialist tooling, later

Buy AI visibility software once manual tracking becomes the bottleneck, not before.

Common questions about learning AI SEO

Short answers here; the FAQ below covers them in full.

Do you need coding?

No. Basic technical literacy helps: HTML, status codes, robots directives, canonicals, structured data. You do not need to become a software engineer before starting.

How long does it take?

Terminology in days, a first real experiment within a month, recognisable patterns across queries and outcomes within 90 days. The skill is investigating what changed, not memorising tactics.

Should you learn SEO before GEO?

Yes, ideally. Conventional fundamentals give you crawling, indexing, relevance, authority, entities and measurement, and GEO makes far more sense once those are clear.

GEO or AEO first?

Learn how AI search works first, then AEO, then GEO. A practical order: SEO, AI search, AEO, GEO, citations, entities, measurement.

Six common AI SEO learning mistakes

  • Learning prompts instead of SEO. A brilliant prompt cannot compensate for bad SEO judgement.
  • Believing every new acronym is a new discipline. GEO, AEO, LLMO and AI SEO overlap; focus on mechanisms and outcomes.
  • Watching courses without building anything. Implementation exposes gaps that videos hide.
  • Measuring one screenshot. AI answers vary; use a query set and repeated observations.
  • Treating your website as the only source. Study the third-party source ecosystem for your queries.
  • Automating too early. Understand the workflow first, then automate it.

Can you learn AI SEO for free?

Yes. Free courses, documentation, research and tools cover SEO, AI search, GEO, AEO, citations, entities, content optimisation and measurement.

Paid education becomes useful when you need something beyond information: live feedback, advanced implementation, community, current experiments or direct access to experienced practitioners. If you are starting from zero, learn and implement the free material first. Learn AI SEO: FAQs

Straight answers to the questions people ask before starting.

How do I start learning AI SEO?

Start with traditional SEO fundamentals, then learn how AI can improve SEO workflows and how AI-powered search changes discovery. From there, study AEO, GEO, citations, entities and measurement. Apply each subject to a real website rather than relying only on courses.

Is AI SEO difficult to learn?

The basic concepts are not particularly difficult. The harder part is developing the judgement to determine which changes matter for a specific query, website and AI-search environment. That comes from practical work.

Can a beginner learn AI SEO?

Yes. Beginners should start with SEO fundamentals before moving into AI-search optimisation. You do not need coding experience to begin.

Can I learn AI SEO for free?

Yes. There are enough free resources to learn SEO fundamentals, GEO, AEO, AI citations, entities and AI visibility measurement. The main investment is implementation time.

Do I need to learn traditional SEO first?

You should learn the fundamentals. AI-powered search still exists within a wider search and web ecosystem involving crawling, indexing, content, links, entities and authority.

What is the difference between AI SEO and GEO?

AI SEO is commonly used as the broader term for applying AI to SEO and optimising for AI-powered search. GEO specifically focuses on visibility within generative search and answer systems. Terminology varies between providers.

What should I learn first: GEO or AEO?

Learn how AI search works first. Then study AEO and GEO as overlapping optimisation approaches rather than completely separate disciplines.

Do I need coding for AI SEO?

No. Technical knowledge becomes useful as you progress, but beginners can learn and implement substantial AI SEO work without programming.

How long does it take to learn AI SEO?

You can understand the terminology within days and complete a first practical project within a month. Professional competence takes longer because it requires repeated implementation, measurement and experimentation.

What is the best way to practise AI SEO?

Use a real website. Choose a query set, establish a baseline across Google and relevant AI systems, make controlled improvements and measure what changes. That turns theory into evidence.

Start learning AI SEO

The best way to learn AI SEO is to stop treating it as something you need to finish learning before you can start. Learn one concept. Implement it. Measure it. Then move forward.
