Module 06 · Lesson 1 of 4
Links Versus Mentions in AI Search
A link is a hypertext connection. A citation is a displayed reference accompanying an AI-generated answer. A mention is your brand named anywhere, with or without a link. Traditional off-page SEO treated the unlinked mention as a failure: no anchor, no juice, no point. AI search changes that arithmetic, because entity association runs on names, not HTML.
What each one is worth
| Signal | Mechanics | Contributes to |
|---|---|---|
| Followed link | HTML anchor to your URL | Discovery, association, authority transfer |
| AI citation | Displayed source reference on a generated answer | Visibility at the question, referral clicks, evidence of selection |
| Plain mention | Your entity named, no link | Entity association, corroboration, reputation |
| Branded search growth | People searching your name | Independent demand signal |
The interesting row is the plain mention. When a trade article writes "unlike Northside Plumbing, most national firms sub-contract inspections", that sentence ties your entity to your category and your differentiator without a single tag of HTML. Systems that assemble answers about "reliable plumbers that do their own inspections" read that agreement. Ten consistent mentions across credible sources often do more for your citation eligibility than one footer link farm ever did for rankings.
The honest conversion question
Should you chase the link whenever you find an unlinked mention? Sometimes. The classic move is a polite note to the author: happy the piece landed, here is the correct URL if a link helps readers. Some convert, most do not, and neither outcome devalues the mention. The wrong move is treating every unlinked mention as a debt the world owes you. Log it, thank whatever brought it about, occasionally ask, and move on.
- Search your exact brand name and its common misspellings, then your name plus your category ("Northside Plumbing reviews", "Northside Plumbing Leeds").
- Also search your founder's name and your product names. Mentions hide under people and products.
- For each result that is not your own site: log source, date, linked or unlinked, accurate or not, and the context sentence.
- Mark every inaccuracy for correction and every unlinked mention from a strong source as a possible conversion.
Set a calendar repeat quarterly. The list becomes your corroboration record and your outreach seed bed at once.
- Run the mention audit across brand, founder and main product. Target at least 15 external results.
- Split the log into linked and unlinked, and note the context of each mention in one sentence.
- Correct one factual inaccuracy, and send one polite link-conversion request to the most credible unlinked source.
- Add the quarterly repeat to your calendar.
